With painstaking care, every new LA-2A unit is point-to-point handwired in Scotts Valley, California, with every component carefully evaluated for authenticity. Universal Audio’s Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveling Amplifier reissue provides the performance characteristics of the iconic original. ”Bill” Putnam later purchased this patented technology, continuing to manufacture the LA-2A for years to come. His ingenious optical compression design was a technological breakthrough, far surpassing the stability and transparency of earlier circuits. Teletronix founder Jim Lawrence first used photocells for controlling audio gain in the early 1960s. WIth its unique tube-driven electro-optical attenuator system that allows instantaneous gain reduction with no increase in harmonic distortion, the LA-2A massages signals like no other compressor ever made. Today UA is a market leader in both providing home and studio audio solutions via a suite of authentic analogue emulation plug-ins, premium quality analogue to digital converters as well as their iconic analogue hardware models. For over 50 years the Teletronix LA-2A has been revered for its smooth, natural, musical compression. UA was re-founded in 1999 by Bill’s sons with the goal of recreating the classic analogue machines as well as inventing new digital tools with the sound and spirit of the classic analogue sound. Industry standards such as the LA-2A and 1176 compressors and the 610 console were used to record everyone from The Beach Boys to Van Halen. Via the UA, Studio Electronics and UREI brands Putnam produced equipment that is still in use today. Putnam was the first engineer to use artificial reverb on a commercial recording and along with Les Paul was involved in the development of stereophonic recording. True to the original design and performance, the contemporary LA-2A has all of the high frequency glow and huge tone that made the vintage units a staple in studios.
This tube-driven optical limiter has been on more hit records than we can count, and for good reason. Putnam was a passionate innovator and the favourite engineer of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ray Charles just to name a few and is credited with the invention of the modern recording console, the multi band equaliser and the vocal booth. The Universal Audio LA-2A reissue represents the rebirth of a studio classic. Universal Audio was founded in 1958 in California by Bill Putnam Sr who is credited as a father of modern recording. Musos Corner is proud to be an authorised retailer and service agent for Universal Audio equipment.
